SAFEPASS- EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

What is Safe Pass? Safe Pass is a single-day safety awareness program designed for individuals working in the construction industry.

The program's objectives are to enhance safety awareness standards in the construction field and ensure that all construction workers, upon completing the one-day awareness program, can actively contribute to accident and health hazard prevention while on the job site.


The Safepass program is administered and overseen by Solas, which can be found at www.solas.ie.



Who Needs to Undergo Safe Pass Awareness Training? The Safe Pass Safety Awareness Program, in accordance with the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, applies to:

(a) Craft and general construction workers, (b) Individuals engaged in on-site security work, and (c) Persons or categories of individuals as specified by the Minister.

The Health and Safety Authority, in conjunction with the Construction Advisory Committee, has created a summary of who falls within the scope of Safe Pass requirements.


What is the Cost of the Solas Safe Pass Course? The cost of the Solas Safe Pass course is €165.



Who Covers the Expenses for the Safe Pass Course? Typically, the employer covers the cost of the Safe Pass course. According to sections 10, 25, and 26 of the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act, 2005, employers are responsible for allowing employees time off from their duties for awareness training, which should be reasonable and take into account health and safety, without any loss of remuneration. However, if you are a student or a seasonal worker, you will be responsible for paying for the Safe Pass course yourself.


When Do I Need to Renew My Safe Pass? The Safe Pass awareness course should be renewed every four years.


What Should I Do If I Lose My Solas Safe Pass Card? If your Safe Pass Registration Card is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can request a replacement, which costs €32.

To request a replacement card, complete the Online Replacement Card Form, attach a current high-quality passport-style photograph, and submit the online payment. It's important to ensure that your photo is of high quality, as applications may be rejected if the photo is of low quality. Replacement cards are typically issued within two to three weeks upon receiving a fully completed replacement form and the correct payment.


Can I Complete My Safe Pass Training Online? Currently, the Safe Pass course cannot be taken online.


Safe Pass is a mandatory one-day health and safety awareness program.

The program's goal is to enhance safety awareness standards in the construction industry and ensure that all site personnel undergo basic health and safety awareness training over time, enabling them to work on-site without posing a risk to themselves or others affected by their actions.


Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will receive a Safe Pass Registration Card.

  1. Passport-sized photo.

  2. Your PPS Number.

  • Promoting a Safety Culture

  • Duties and Responsibilities at Work

  • Accident Reporting and Prevention

  • Working at Heights

  • Excavations and Confined Spaces

  • Working with Electricity Underground and Overhead Services

  • Personal Protective Equipment

  • Use of Hand-Held Equipment, Tools, and Machinery

  • Safe Use of Vehicles

  • Noise and Vibration

  • Manual Handling

  • Health and Hygiene

In summary, the Solas Safe Pass course involves a one-day training session at a cost of €160, with renewal required every four years, typically covered by the employer.
